Disabilities Community Medicaid Services (MR/DD)

Adaptive and Assistive Definition:

“Adaptive and Assistive Equipment” means any non-disposable (more than one use) item not covered by Medicaid through the Medicaid state plan. Adaptive/assistive equipment aids provided are limited to items that assist the consumer in activities of daily living (bathing, grooming, oral care, perineal care, eating, toileting, ambulation and transfer) or in instrumental activities of daily living (communication, meal preparation, etc.). Following is the exhaustive list of covered items:

  • eating utensils adaptive feeding dishes plate guards
  • latex straps hand splints reachers
  • feeder seats adjustable pointer sticks adaptive beds
  • vehicle hand controls telecommunication devices for the deaf (TDD)
  • animal support services (dog/monkey) veterinary bills for (dog/monkey)
  • computerized communication boards wedges
  • sidelyers adaptive electrical switches air conditioners
  • dehumidifiers folding shopping carts prone boards
  • sand bags bolsters hand held shower heads
  • humidifiers emergency response systems

Provider Qualifications:

Medical equipment companies that provide adaptive/assistive equipment may be providers. Any agency or individual who is approved as an adaptive/assistive equipment provider under the Medicaid state plan may provide the services. Veterinarians providing services to support animals must be appropriately licensed by the State of Ohio.

A unit of service for adaptive and assistive equipment is the purchase price or monthly rental charge and installation charges, if any, for each item of adaptive and assistive equipment and the cost to replace necessary parts, and or repair. A unit for veterinarian services to support animals is the charge for the visit and the services provided.

ASSURANCES OF PROVIDERS:

 
Certified providers of adaptive/assistive equipment shall assure the following:

   1. Provide training to the consumer, family, and/or other appropriate individuals on the proper utilization of said equipment;
   2. Participate in the consumer’s Individual Service Plan (ISP) meetings if and when requested by the consumer’s interdisciplinary team; and
   3. Repair equipment as authorized by the county board representative;
   4. Provide follow-up services as necessary;
   5. Provide for proper installation of equipment, if required;
   6. Properly maintain rental equipment, if required; and
   7. Assume full liability for equipment improperly installed or maintained
